This fall, the School of Medicine and Public Health is proud to offer a new collaborative course, Health Disparities Research: Histories, Practices, and Methods, co-taught by two recently appointed faculty members whose work bridges the humanities and public health.
Dr. Dana Landress, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical History and Bioethics, and Dr. Ryan Powell, Assistant Professor in the Department of Geriatrics & Gerontology and Associate Director of the Center for Health Disparities Research (CHDR), have joined forces to create a unique learning experience for students in the MD and PhD in Population Health Sciences programs.
The course examines the historical and structural roots of health disparities in the United States while introducing students to current methodologies in health disparities research. Through the use of landmark case studies, research frameworks, and hands-on workshops—including the development of a draft NIH Aims Page—students will have the opportunity to connect historical insight with cutting-edge research practices.
In addition to classroom learning, the course will feature guest speakers from across SMPH and offer opportunities for student-led presentations and peer collaboration. This course represents the growing commitment at UW–Madison to foster interdisciplinary education that prepares future researchers and clinicians to address inequity in health with rigor, empathy, and historical awareness.
Course Starts: September 15
Instructors:
• Dr. Dana Landress (Medical History & Bioethics)
